now, you can have a pre-listen to "Sigrlinn", another song from the upcoming Leaves Eyes album "Meredead"!
"Sigrlinn" own words by LIV KRISTINE:
When Thorsten presented his first idea of this song, I immediately knew that it had to be sung in Norwegian. I chose “nynorsk”, which is next to “bokmaal”, one of two official Norwegian written standard languages in Norway. I chose the title “Sigrlinn” for one single reason: Phonetically, there is a “sweet” and traditional sound to the name, which is perfect for my “sung” poem. I would call it romantic poetry, written in dialogical form between the protagonists Sigrlinn and Sveinung, and the narrating choir or the narrating single voice. For Alex, it meant hard work to sing in Norwegian “dialect” (both my sister Carmen (Midnattsol) and myself supervising him – poor Alex!). However, by the help of phonetic transcription he mastered this task perfectly! Even I had to get used to the thought of singing a complete lyrical piece in my mother tongue. I would say that it makes the song even more personal. It felt very important and comfortable to have my sister singing with me (Thank you, my dear Carmen!)! Thematically, my poem presents the married couple Sigrlinn and Sveinung, living by the fjord. Sveinung leaves his wife for the sake of bringing home more goods, which might be heroic, however, there is no happy end to his journey. Bad weather, the harsh mountainous landscape, Froeya and the three-headed troll play the decisive role to his fate.
Here’s my translation of Sigrlinn from “nynorsk” to modern English.
Have a pleasant reading!
Liv
Sigrlinn (original)
Du ville heim fara Som du eingong lova Ingen kunne gjeva meg meir Du som meg sveipte i brurelin Men runer dei meir visste Enn eg ville vite
Han ville heim fara Som han deg eingong lova Ingen kunne gjeva deg meir Han som deg sveipte i brurelin Men runer dei meir visste Enn ho ville vite
Mot din vilje MØy mot din vilje Frå garde han fór Frå garde han fór Kaldvind herja Uvettet ylte Jordi ho skalv Frå garde han fór Mot min vilje Eg fór frå garde Eg ville gjeva deg meir Som eg deg eingong lova Du Sigrlinn Atles dotter
I soli lyser perlebandet Du er fager men sorg du gjev meg Over huldreheimar vil du fara Såre sorgi set åt meg no

Sveinung: I left our home For I wanted to give you more Like I once promised you You, Sigrlinn, Atle’s daughter
Sigrlinn: In the sun my necklace of pearls is shining You are beautiful, but you make me cry Through the hills of *hulder you will ride Great sorrow is within my heart
Sveinung: I was riding on, out of my mind There, Froeya’s piercing eyes In the fog across misty mountains A three-headed troll hit me
Shivering shields, You killed my brothers

Etain is a figure of Irish mythology, best known as the heroine of Tochmarc Etain (English: The Wooing Of Etain), one of the oldest and richest stories of the Mythological Cycle. She also figures in the Middle Irish Togail Bruidne Dα Derga (English: The Destruction of Da Derga's Hostel). T. F. O'Rahilly identified her as a sun goddess
wreo! (apo wikipedia) Gia to "Krakevisa":
Leaves' Eyes will be releasing the new album "Meredead" on April 22nd, 2011. The band has now posted a preview of the song "Krεkevisa" online, which can be heard through the band's MySpace page. Vocalist Liv Kristine commented on the track:
"Krεkevisa (The Crow Song), also called Mannen og Krεka (The Farmer and the Crow), is a traditional folklore in the genre Scandinavian medieval ballads. I know it from primary school as we used to sing it in the school's choir. There are different versions in Norway, which also uses other melodies. It is one of the best known folk tunes in my home country, however, it is also well-known in Sweden, Denmark and across the Faeroe Island. It's interesting that Krεkevisa is said to be related to 'Hαkun Rνπur Ν Timburskσg', the Faeroese children's rhyme. Let me translate Krεkevisa's first verse; first the Norwegian version, then the English one:
Og mannen han gjekk seg i vedaskog, Hei fara, i vedaskog. Dε sat der ei krεka i lunden og gol. Hei fara, faltu riltu raltura.
The man went into the firewood forest Hei fara, to the firewood forest There he heard crowing from the grove Hei fara, faltu riltu raltura
"What happens to the crow in the following verses, I guess is not hard to imagine, for it's definitely not a romantic love story! However, the end is what makes real sense to me personally. The message is: A man is not worth a crow if he doesn't realize its value. In a modern sense, I see clearly a connotation to the unfair, insane, money-controlled meat-industry, versus those peoples, like the Aborigines and the Eskimos, who are able to survive only because they have inherited knowledge over generations about fair trade with and careful treatment of Nature.
"Thank you, Anette, for having this wonderful idea, and for singing along! I sang it this morning, walking through the forest!"
