Spirits' Masquerade:

The doomy start of that song with its' dynamic choirs and marching snare drums would just be the perfect soundtrack to march into war. At the same time the song comes along in an unusual time signature with heavy and almost “proggy” staccato guitars, like on Njords “Ragnarok”. The Uilleann pipes and the mandoline both set a short moment of hope, before the band jumps into the very heavy verse and chorus to bring back an atmosphere of doom. I like very much how Livs voice is supporting the dynamics and dramatic of the song and also the way she is singing along with the choir, pretty unique. Just when you think the end of the song and total doom has come, a whole new world opens. Irish whistles, Livs voice and later the choir put you somewhere on the green island of Ireland. The dynamic range of the song is really mind blowing and I get goosebumps in that song part every time I hear it, before the song is building up again towards a massive and epic final. Yes, I always liked the endings of old Manowar songs like “Battle hymns” and “Black Wind, Fire and Steel”. Epic Metal!!!


Sigrlinn:

This is maybe the song that I am most proud of and emotional about on the whole album. In 9 minutes this song covers so many different atmospheres, from super heavy epic parts to dramatic Norwegian spoken parts from Liv. It also features a very orchestral start and tons of heavy rhythm and lead guitars from Sander and myself. To me, this song feels like an odyssey, like a little album of its own. Again it’s the huge amount of musical dynamic range that makes the song so special to me. I also used some very unusual open tunings on the accoustic guitar for that song, which makes it sound more like an ancient instrument. I’ve always loved the long and epic songs from bands like Led Zeppelin and Iron Maiden as well as the great classic and progressive rock bands from the Seventies. It’s a kind of musical expression that seemed to get lost a bit in the last years. So this may be our statement to bring back this vibe of “art” music again. Epic music with epic sound and song structures!!!
